A barcode is 12–14 plain digits. It identifies the product itself, not this particular batch — there is no date in it. This is the most common mix-up.

Common mistakes with NARS codes

  • Copy the code exactly as printed — keep leading zeros, keep letters, and drop any spaces or dashes you see between groups.
  • 0 and O, 1 and I, 8 and B are the three pairs people misread most. If the print is faint, tilt the package under a light before guessing.
  • The box and the bottle can carry different codes. They are usually filled at the same time, but if they disagree, trust the one on the item itself.

What the date does and doesn't tell you

  • It is the manufacture date, not an expiry date. Unopened shelf life runs from it; once opened, the period-after-opening symbol on the pack takes over.
  • It says nothing about how the product was stored. Heat, sunlight and a car glovebox age a product far faster than the calendar does.
  • It is not a proof of authenticity. A code that decodes cleanly only means it fits the brand's own scheme — it cannot tell a genuine item from a good copy.
